Fitness to Practise

Facing a Fitness to Practise Concern

Understand the concern, professional standard and evidence before responding.

Identify the professional concern

Ask what conduct or competence is in issue and how it relates to the standards for your course or profession. Fitness to practise processes are distinct from a simple punishment for wrongdoing and may consider risk and support.

Review the record

Request the placement reports, witness material and other evidence relied upon. Prepare your own chronology, relevant feedback and any steps taken to address the concern. Explain factual disagreements separately from your response to a genuine issue.

Check fairness and support

Read the process for hearings, representation, adjustments, outcomes and appeals. Ask what support or remediation is possible and keep records of the final decision and deadline.
