How to Make a University Complaint

Choose the complaints route, set out what went wrong and explain the remedy you seek.

Identify the right route

An appeal usually challenges a decision about academic progression or assessment; a complaint may concern the service or experience provided. Your institution's rules determine how the issue should be raised and whether informal resolution comes first.

Set out a usable account

Give a dated account, identify the relevant promise or procedure, attach key evidence and state what response would address the problem. Keep a copy of the complaint and acknowledgment.

Follow the stages

Check the time limits for a formal complaint and any internal review. When no further internal step is available, the provider should issue a Completion of Procedures letter for an eligible external complaint.
